THANK G-D IT'S FRIDAY!

DREAMING OF HIGHER THINGS...
FRIDAY PEOPLE

On 24 April 1981 that was the title of Caroline Holland's article in the Weekend Leisure Section on page 16 of the Islington Gazette featuring the then New Acropolis Press Officer: 23-years-old Spanish teacher, Mr. Julian Scott, its 34-years-old polyglot archæologist Chairman: Señor Horacio Labat, and myself as fellow-workers for this international educational foundation at its U.K. home in the basement of a School of English in Upper Street, Islington. "Do you see any point to life?" Caroline asked. "Are you happy? Do you feel you are contributing anything to your fellow man?" For Ms. Holland, as for the now Ascended Mistress of The Rainbow Programme, Dr. Joan D'Arcy Cooper, "man" signifies whichever being "minds", has "a mind", is truly capable of "minding"...

Founded in Argentina by Professor George Livagra in 1960 and established in England in, if I remember rightly, 1976, the central perception is that there is something seriously wrong with our world at the moment; people aren't happy - they lack certainty. Señor Labat compared mid-20th century society with that of the Victorian era, when thing were kept neat and tidy, with a place for everything and everything in its place, and when everybody just knew that life has a purpose...

Julian Scott was quick to point out that religious conversion of any sort, whether from or to Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam or even the Tao was not the answer. True religion unites the person with G-d I+N prayer - and prayer isn't a sedative to put us to sleep, but a stimulus to generous self-forgetfulness and social action. Read the story of the Good Samaritan. In today's complex post-industrial, post-nuclear-deterrence and post-9/11 society, when things are all moving so fast that sometimes it all seems a blur, 'education', by which one needs to understand 'authentic Self-education', is an indispensable key to effectiveness.

"We want to see a better world," said Mr. Scott. "It cannot be done just by abolishing hunger and suffering; it's done by changing people's mentality and fostering in them a need to serve." Societies in the Middle-Ages became corrupt because the Churches and Temples, the Synagogues and Mosques became enmeshed in the political and financial side of things. Culture cannot safely be entrusted to either our religious or our political leaders, and certainly not to those who control the financial markets. That is why we now so urgently need a multi-cultural Community (Gemeinschaft) and not any sort of culturally neutral, morally spineless and crudely pragmatic society (both schrechlich and unheimlich!)...

As I had written a few weeks before: "National and local government, when dominated by an ideology of sociological or biological inspiration, has not given us the peace and happiness we seek, but the uncertainties and anxieties that threaten society with destruction. The individual person feels weak, abandoned. For fear of being betrayed by yet another mistaken theory, by yet another false dream of Utopia, one takes refuge in SCEPTICISM, CYNICISM, NIHILISM.

For many people today life is without either meaning or value! Yet many still feel instinctively that life has some point, that reality is not absurd, that materialism is not the answer. (And, incidentally, David Hume himself was wise enough to be sceptical about his own scepticism!)

Be attentive, be intelligent, be reasonable, be responsible, develop and, if necessary change! This slogan can guide your thinking towards: THE MOST BALANCED JUDGMENT POSSIBLE, THE MOST APPROPRIATE ACTION PRACTICABLE.

I recommend Self-development. It is only each individual's conscious, responsible and deliberate self-affirmation as a knower-and-lover that can take us beyond the limits set by biological and social conditioning. Thanks to the structures of self-affirmation we can be strong, free in the present, optimistic about the future. Thus, life acquires a new, an added dimension.

Whether you are a fisherman or a potter, whatever your background or situation, you can distance yourself from it, you can enjoy interior peace whatever the external situation... But it is urgent and important that we work to create an environment in which each and every human being can flourish and expand in beauty, truth and peace..."
